There are more than 200 "factors", and nobody outside of the search engines knows which are "important".

There are lots of theories and speculations but that is all they are.

Forget about looking for formulas and quick fixes and just build a good site.

From my experience backlinks with keywords in anchor text has the biggest influence on a website's position in the SERPs.

That said, SEO is also important to make sure Google understands the content of your pages. This is basically just making sure your keywords are in the right places on your pages.

content "quality" is subjective. NOT a quantifiable parameter so cannot be used in a mathmatical equation.

meta description is not used for "ranking"

"Related" is also subjective rather than quantitiable.

I beg to differ about your meta description
Search engines do look at the description still.
How do I know?
I can put up a new article, use a unique meta description and search for that description a few hours later and find my article.
If the search engines didn't look at this, there is no way I could find that particular post.

And are the words in the meta description nowhere to be found on the page? OR does your CMS (like many do) use the meta description as a snippet for the page/post?

What? I thought all you had to do was get "do-follow" backlinks from high PR sites! Now you have ruined everything!

In all honesty, this is not true. I recently tested a site where I linked OUT to hundreds of authority sites, and only had 6-8 backlinks and got that site to a PR4 (in the toolbar). I was quite shocked, and it changed the way I think about linking out.

BTW all my out links were free from the rel=nofollow, so that also debunks the myth that if you link out with "do-follow" links you give away all your link juice.

It is just an experiment, but I was surprised at the results. And, there is good content on the site as well

You will get at least a 1000+ books on the major factors of seo. Then you will have On Page and Off Page Factors. But at the end of the tunnel you will realize that simple logic is the key to better seo.

I really feel that its the both On page and Off page factors which goes hand in hand for the ranking..

In On page :
The heading, Content, Keyword density in the content, Anchor Texts and Alt Tags, Title, Meta and Site structure .

In Off Page:
The Submission especially to forums, Links exchanges, Social bookmarkings and Social networkings.. and also Article submissions, Classifieds..too ;;

Thanks

Backlinks, Backlinks & Quality backlinks......matters for pagerank.

however, i wouldn't worry much abt pagerank, ranking for targeted/more(most) visited keyword is what matters in traffic & conversion.
