All these directory sites like dmoz, pegasus etc....

What I mean is, as anyone can add their page to these sites, do the search engines not consider them as important links?

I have a list of around 50 directory sites and am not sure if it's worth the hassle of submitting to all but I'm sure you guys will give me a good answer.

ok, so despite being not seen as important...do they help at all towards how the SE's rank your site or are they only useful as another source of traffic (albeit a very small source)?

Do you advise that I submit to all these directories or am I wasting my time? cheers.

Not even that.

On all the sites I've looked after over the last 12 - 15 years I could count the number of useful visitors from directories without taking my shoes of.

Maybe, maybe not. They help get the ball rolling (or the spider crawling) as far as SEs go.

Your time would be better served in getting links to deeper pages.

Originally just playing about with pages on Tripod, and building a "self help site" for the company network users to switch from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 and NT4.0.
Then got interested in how the likes of AltaVista, Hotbot (and HastalaVista which back then was a "underground" Search Engine) worked. Then Google came along and the rest as they say .... is history.

Since then built various sites, just really whatever has got my interest at the time, and as such it's been a fairly varied learing experience.

Nice. I always wondered what happened to Altavista.

I also used to build some sites with tripod when i was about 15 for people. Did it for about £10 a site for those who were computer illiterate.

Wish I'd carried it on now because I realised recently that I actually used to make more money off my own back (rather than just having a job) when I was 15 than I do now. So now want to throw myself into it which is why I'm here anxiously trying to find out which 'seo tips' are junk and which aren't.

Hmm but Google is still 10 years if you include excite I don't know if the years would sum up to 15 years as far as seo is concern.

Google launched (as Google) in 1998, SEO is not a recent "invention" AltaVista was "king of the hill" in 1995, HotBot appeared in 1996 and SEO wasn't even a word back then

Directory Submission is no way one most effective way nowadays to promote your website and improve SERP.It will give more value when you link your website with varied anchor titles for submission.

Directory submission will not help for traffic, unless it is Yahoo directory. Directory submission is not helpful for SEO. But niche directory submission helps. For example you are going to promote 'real estate customer in Canada', you should submit real estate sites in Canada(.ca domains).

A PR0 page with tons of link don't will have much "link juice".
I get best result with truly recommendations in sites than with this "easy" links.

I think directory submission does not help a lot to increase the traffic but it helps in link popularity. So, directory submission is definitely an important part of optimization process

Web directory submission is also an important part of off page SEO but it does not weigh to much when it comes to SERP rankings compare to the other techniques of off page SEO.Somehow it can generate traffic especially if you submit your site to a directory which is really related and somehow relevant to your site itself.
