Hi guys

I have just got hold of a new server which is very good, but it has a german ip address, I never really thought about this, but as i know some search engines use the ip address, do anoy of you think this is going to cause any problems, as my site is going to be uk based ? with a german ip server ip address ?

If it is a .co.uk hostname it shouldn't be.

I don't think country of Ip address of host effects search engine.

But if you are making this site for UK based users then your website response time might be little less for UK users.
If you would have hosted the site in Uk it would have been better for users.

You think wrong.

However, the TLD has a more pronounced effect for geo-location.

i know it does have some effect on search engines, but in google you can let google know where ur site is based, so i assume this is for such reasons as servers in different countries at a guess and maybe a few other things ? or am i just guessing lol ?

If I was running a website for the uk audience, I would recommend getting a .co.uk & UK hosting. It couldn't hurt and there are some good hosts over there.

You should at least set your Geographic target in google webmaster tools to the UK if your hosted in Germany and your target market is the Uk.........

Go to settings and it should show the below.................

Geographic target

Your site's domain is currently associated with the target: United Kingdom

yes it is a big issue. 2 years ago i have purchased my domain from manashosting of india as they are providing cheap hosting. But that is a crap, their server has problem maximum time. I always received a lot of emails from various website that they can not see my website, after that i shifted to godaddy, now it is in excellent condition. So hosting, server ip is the most essential.

Google use the TLD primarily (or you can use Google Webmaster Tools for select a Geo-Target public for Google).
Anyway host in country of your users will make it faster for this visitors and it's really more important than one or two positions in a search engine.

When the truly public Internet first came into existence and the best connections were still 56K modems, when the DNS system wasn't as developed as it is now the inter-country/continent speed for hosting was a real factor.

Now it isn't even a consideration. The lag between the major countries in the world and across continents is now imperceptable.
Often in many cases the lag times might be greater to a server in your own country than a server in another continent.

ISPs and hosting companies don't run on banks of 33.6k modems any more or on paired ISDN connections.
They are on "fat pipes" just off the Internet backbones, the world has moved on since 1995 and server location is really not that much of a consideration.

I really don't understand how people can bring up these "facts" that were the case often before they were even born!!
The world of technology moves on very quickly, keeping up with it is essential.

Hi chris

I have been doing some research into this issue, and found lots of good advice.

The general theory being if you are using a local domain .co.uk the server Ip wont make much difference at all, using a general domain .com and .org for example it might have more impact. Many people have said its an issue but not something to overly stress about.

As chris says speed isnt really an issue anymore as sometimes you can get a faster speed from servers in different countrys, which is strange but true.

Fortunatly most of the domains im using are local anyhow, so the server ip wont have much impact anyway.
