What is the easiest way to backlink?

I have notices some of the threads I write on show up as backlinks while others don't even though I use the same signature for both.
I am releasing a new DVD which I will be selling and am looking to optimize my SEO and backlinking. My web designer knows a good amount about both, but I am wondering if there are things I should be doing daily?
Write on blogs? forums? Submit articles?
What are some other ways?

First, I highly doubt that a webdesigner knows mush about SEO, usually doesn't happen that way.
Links in forums really aren't that valuable as a "backlink", they can provide traffic if placed in the right forum (in your case, it looks like you need to find more sports oriented forums, blogs, etc.. to network with others in your niche)

Forums and blogs don't hurt, visit them daily, but don't count on them too much.
Submitting articles is a very poor way of generating links. A lot of effort for one or two little links, hardly seems worth it. Besides, if you're writing content, why not make better use of it - put it on your site, bookmark it. Maybe even head over to Squidoo and make a lens out of it. But putting up on an article site seems pointless to me.
Why not try and think of things in a more "real world" context? Essentially, you're looking to sell this DVD. If you were to do that in the real world, what would you do?
Find a distribution service would be the first place. There are many out there, don't know for DVDs but for musicians, for examples, there are tons of places - like CDBaby etc.
Next, you've got to let people know it's available. Write a press release and send it to prominent blogs and online magazines that might be interested in featuring it. Maybe contact them and say you'd like to run a competition and give a few copies away in exchange for a little plug.
As with anything in this world, get the word out there and the rest will follow.

What are some good press release sites?
How much does that typically cost?

Try some social bookmarking and small blogs, but still forum posts can help you.

Dunno.
I don't run any sites these days that would get any benefit from press releases. PRWeb & PRNewsWire were top dogs when I did, but times change

don't just post them, try sending them directly to other sites as well. Shout loudly about your new release and people might hear.

pick some decent blogs, portals, online magazines in your niche and write a great PR, make it nice and emphatic - use plenty of superlatives. If you catch the editors eye, you could get a great promotional post and a backlink that could be pretty valuable

While I agree with all the above .
Please dont make such a general assumption regarding webdesigner's
I know a few and they know a lot about a lot.
Even myself i consider myself to be a fairly competent designer however i also do the GFX, Programming, Promotion, SEO and pretty much everything else.
Then again, I am awesome.. So maybe it just me then.

Do follow blogs are easy once you put the time in upfront to develop your list of blogs. Otherwise, message boards and social media.
