Ok, sorry I know this is probably a stupid question...Does making regular minor changes (like just spelling etc) to a web page affect how is is valued by search engines?

Yes.

It may not always be negative, but the page will have to be re-evaluated each time it changes.

so, if i make a very small spelling change or whatever is it likely to just be given the same value?

Is it preferable for SEO to keep the page the same unless you're making bg changes to it?

e.g. Recently I've been playing around a lot with the position of adverts on my site and the general layout. The content is more or less the same. Is this likely to affect my rankings? Thanks.

If its only a small change and wont change how your keywords and content is laid out, Then the effect will probably be minimal to none on search engines.

Changing whole paragraphs on the other hand....

Going back to this...I have one web page which is doing surprisingly well on google for a competitive search term. I want to add some content to it to make it better and hopefully boost its position further.

Is making these changes (i.e. doubling the amount of content) likely to cause the page to be seen as 'new' and lose its position, at least for a while? I've noticed taht the longer I leave a web page the better it does in the SERP's.

TRY it there's three things that could happen.

1: It could go up.

2: It could go down.

3: Nothing at all.

BTW Did I miss the bit where you mentioned that you wanted to improve the page for users and conversions??

That i my main reason, I have a section for UK users and want to add a section for USA visitors but I want it all to be on the same page (with anchor links).

I'm happy to do this but am just interested in whether it will take ages to get back to the original position (or better) once I have made those changes. I'm interested in hearing the results of people with far more experience than me.

Only YOU can find out what will happen to your page when you change it.

What I do to a page on MY site will have no meaning at all for something YOU do on YOUR site.

There are no magic formulas in the SEO world, it is ALWAYS change something, monitor the results, revert the page back to before the change, monitor the results.
"rinse and repeat" to see if the same thing happens on each occasion.
You can't "break" anything.

Test things for yourself NOT rely on somebody elses possibly flawed reasoning.
