Start promoting it. Create some interest BEFORE the event.

It's what marketing and promotion is all about

Build a targeted (e)mailing list. Sign up for some internet marketing newsletters. For the most part you can ignore what they're selling, but pay attention to how they're doing they're launches. The Warrior Forum might also be able to give you some ideas for a successful launch.

What you can be doing while your website is getting ready is - marketing, marketing and more marketing. Its how you market your site and your product that will make the difference. I am not a marketing guru, but I do know that nothing works like marketing. So, its marketing for your product and SEO for your website.

Make sure your on-page optimization is being taken care of.

This is the time when Press Releases are actually meant to be used!

You start weeks before the event with "coming soon" etc

Do you never walk down your local "high street" and look at posters for a new bar/club/shop developement?
There will be "Opening soon" displays before the first brick is laid!

REAL promotion is about creating an interest in whatever it is. REAL marketing is about raising "brand awareness".

It is NOT the dumba$$ tactics of random link dropping at "social media" sites with an excuse for a marketing slogan disguised as "important keywords".
Crass stupidity and hopefully these kind of idiots will wither and die off

You are NOT aiming for "rankings", that's a long term target and your launch will be well and truly over by the time you get them.

LOL. Hit the nail. Generate some interest. Humans are very inquisitive as it is. Also if you have some time at hand, build lists! Yep. build lists of people whom you can ask for a link, a review, probably some name dropping at some conference, etc.

Then what you can do is create some articles, presentations, PDFs and such other material that you can publish. They come in very handy later on.

Write a few articles which you can stockpile and then release slowly (not too many at once) for backlinks once your site is up and running. Maybe open a Squidoo account and write a draft lens (don't publish until site is up and running).

If you want to really get into the seo backlink building scene, then even create a blog (eg wordpress) and start building backlinks to it.
