Actually they never will manage it better than they do now. There are some cases where the www sub-domain and the non-www version may well be different. It is only accepted convention that the two will resolve to the same content provider.
As an example, for technical reasons, we have some sites on our servers where the hostname (non-www) has to resolve to a Linux box and the website itself has to be on a Windows box. Therefore they are on two different IPs.
