i need advice on choosing a .com and .co.nz for domain name

i am building a website for a automobile company which is based in new zealand and i need to choose a domain name now i need advice if i have to choose a .com or .co.nz

the purpose of the website is to sell automobile/car lights, it can be head lights, tail lights for a broad range of car brands so in general the website is about selling automobile/car lights

i have done a bit of keyword research from google keyword research tool and i have chosen few keywords

automobilecarlights
automobilecarlightsonline
onlineautomobilecarlights

i client wants his website over a period of time to be searchable from any country not just from new zealand so what i need advice is should i choose a .co.nz domain because the company is based in new zealand so that people in new zealand are targetted first or should i choose a .com domain straight away as the website is for a long term startegy

alternatively will it be a good idea to build the entire website with a .co.nz domain and also choose a .com and just have one page on .com and create a .htaccess at .com and permanently redirect all traffic to .co.nz where the actual content for the website is and not on .com

any ideas and suggestions will be greatly appreciated

thanks

Go with the com as your main site and the co.nz as the one page pointing to your com.

go with the country specific domain. This won't get you filtered out of global results, but could help you rank better in that country.

Either it is .com or .co.nz it is searchable fro anywhere in the world.

However it all depends on the company's targeted market:

1. Is the company aims to get customers around the world? If yes, choose .com

2. Is the company want to market their products to new zealanders only? If yes, choose .co.nz

In New Zealand if both pages were the same the co.nz would rank higher, the rest of the world the co.nz would probably never be found.

Co.nz just do a main landing page or portal with all buttons leading to the com, the com have as your main site, just use the same theme throughout so people don't even notice, obviously the com should have a slightly different portal landing page content wise.

Your hostname and/or TLD is going to have little effect on "global visibility".

The .nz tld MAY mean the pages are less likely to be filtered out when searchers use the Localised version of a search engine.

It does NOT provide a boost in the localised search engines.

so if i were to have only a .com domain then this website will have less visibility to the users searching from new zealand and will have better visibility over a period of time for people searching from different parts of the world

I will agree to that, if you are working for someone else then you should be an expert on your subject.

Chris if that was true then UK webmasters are the crappiest in the world, I use Thai google, a server farm in the states, google in aus and I have hardly ever seen a co.uk in the results of my searches,I agree it may not provide a boost in local searches, but local searches will filter out other country domains which will help your placement, probably 90 percent of my searches will have several co.th on first page regardless of the subject of the search, this is using english language searches not goobeldy gook Thai.

You should create .co.nz and avoid .com domain because in the Google search engine always finds the local zone.So if you maintain the .co.nz domain your clients find it very swiftly.
