I just brought a domain discount cisco equipment and notice I am already rank number 2 for the keyword, but my site is still under construction! when I do a search for the keyword this is the result Results 1 - 10 of about 10,900,000 for discount cisco equipment. (0.33 seconds). When I check google keyword tool no one search for that keyword. So my question is, does the keywords in the domain play an important part for keywords that are not high in volume?

First appearance in SERPS and it ranks high, nothing amazing about that

http://www.google.com/search?q=site%...oequipment.com

the exact phrase is in the title and on the page

Why would you think "keywords in the URL" are anything to do with it??

Why would they?

It is the most obvious place for manipulation after all, as so many are keen to prove, and therefore the most obvious thing to ignore.

In ten years of hearing (and reading) how "keyword domains" are "important" for results I have never yet seen a single example where the sole reason for a page to be in any particular SERP is the hostname or URL keywords.
I have run tests in an effort to see if there is some effect, even a minor one,
I've looked at hundreds of "examples", and nothing, absolutely nothing has demonstrated that there is any effect, significant or otherwise.

But it cannot change day-to-day like page title so google may look it as to see what the long-term content is.

Focusing on your targeted keywords in the domain name is rather a disputable question. I think Keywords can be more useful when including it on website's content.

I think domain name does play a tiny part in serps, and I mean real tiny, but look at the top 100, 1,000 sites in the world, 10 15 years ago their domain names were meaningless words, google, yahoo, youtube etc etc etc. If domain name was the be all and end all why isn't email.com the busiest email client, why isn't searchengine.com the busiest search engine, why isn't yourvids.com bigger than youtube.

Actually thinking about it, as we all use url rewrite software it really doesn't make a lot of difference anymore, you want one word in all your urls draw from a folder with that word, lets look at this url webmaster-talk.com/seo-talk-forum/200938-keywords-in-domain-name.html, no doubt there is a webmaster forum on here some where so it would end up with 2 lots of webmaster in it which is pretty worthless if the thread was in there.

I never really thought of the URL not making a difference to the SERPS.

Supermoderator: what tests or evidence have you run to be so sure of your statement.

If you type in any keyword into Google it will not only show high PR sites, but will bring up sites that contain those keywords you entered that are in the URL.

I am not knocking your views but would just lie you to explain what tests and evidence you have done?

Thanks

Nope, it will show you pages with various "values" of SGB

Show me ONE instance where that particular word or phrase is ONLY in the URL.

I have had many tests running where a made up word is in the page name or in the folder name, in the image image name or in the hostname.

NOT ONCE has Google shown these pages or images for that word until a scraper comes along and links to the page with the URL as the anchor text
See this post

Sometimes they appear briefly in the Yahoo! index but it's usually short lived.

Having the primary keyword in the url is beneficial because even if some other websites link to the website using only its url, the site will enjoy the advantage of the keyword as its anchor text.

That is actually a good point and I hadn't thought about it that way. I prefer to buy my domains thinking of them as a description of the site, more for the user than for Google or other SE's. So having the keyword in the domain may help with clickthroughs/

From my experience, keywords NOT being in my URL have not affected my ranking AT ALL. I think that as long as you continue to work on your SEO, both on page and off page you can continue to see results. Or even improve your results for other keywords.

We can't always have our keywords in our domain, that is why we focus more in putting it in our title and description.

You must put your major targeted keyphrase in the title. You can target smaller keyphrases in the title and on the page.

Hi Chris,

Putting a keyword in the url will be a big impact in the ranking of a website. Like what has been done on the site of my client. The exact keyword was put in the url and it rank 1st even I haven't done anything.

Search Engines don't place very much value on keywords in domain names, although domains are almost always an included factor in determining search engine rank, they are not weighed nearly as heavily as the keywords in your title tags and page content.

Your site probably ranks well because the phrase isn't that competitive. In other words, keywords in the URL isn't as effective for competitive phrases. I think age is one of the most important factors though some people disagree.
