I checked the number of my backlinks using an online tool. First day the number was 384. The next day when I checked it was 163. Again on the third day it showed 384. What could be the possible reason for this?

I haven't experience this kind of error yet, but I guess this depends on the tool you are using. try use other tool to make it sure that you're on the right track.
I'm not trying to be a jerk - but I've seen sites at #1 on the first page with only a couple of backlinks. They just did a good job doing on-page optimization (and also a lot of promotion as well).
That is quite true about google that it doesn't show all backlinks to the site ans there are some tools which are not so accurate to show the total backlinks your site has.
the online tool depend on some database like google index, yahoo index, alltheweb index ...etc and these databses are in continuous updating process some links are added and other are removed, some links are removed because the importance of the page is declining
I don't know more about this type of problem during backlink cheking, why show tool backling variation in number,I hope that this type of problem are generated due to not appropriate information getting on this time.
Search engines actually doesn't show the exact number of backlinks that your website have. You can try other tools like backlink watch.

And that would prove what exactly??
These "tools" don't have their own database of links, they "scrape" the data from search engines. So you are simply getting the same inaccurate "data" in a different wrapper.

Read the linked page in post #2 it shouldn't seem as "weird"
