seo-related questions again and again

I have been doing some DIY SEO and I always find myself wondering about the same questions again and again.

I have decided to post them in here in the hope that someone can help. If so, thanks in advance.

1. It is necessary to pay Yahoo dir to rank better? I know it has been said that some people would never pay for it (please explain). Although my website is indexed by google and yahoo search, it doesn’t appear in the directory.
2. Is it true that submitting your website’s sitemap to google reports benefits?
3. Is it good or not to submit press releases?
4. True or false: I have just read in a website that the links that other sites are using to link to your website must either contain the whole www.randomsite.com or your chosen keywords, but NEVER part of your url ei. randomsite.com. Why? You are supposed to get penalised for that as search engines think that they are mirror sites.
5. How can you check if your keyword ranking is going down due to hijacking (redirects…)?
6. Does anyone know what a search engine report contains? I am doing my own kind of search engine analysis with free tools from websites that I found on my way like Page rank, keywords rank, link popularity, density and saturation. However, I can’t avoid thinking that what I am doing is rubbish and surely it is.
7. difference between aspx and html. I’ve got aspx

Well, this is it.

Thank you for your help!

Nope. In the old days if you paid to get listed in the Yahoo! Directory you could virtually guarantee a huge hit of visitors for a couple of months, after that it would tail off. Not sure what it's like nowadays but you can still make the initial investment back in sales.

I rarely submit sitemaps to Google and have never had any problems getting pages indexed. It doesn't do any harm to add one though, especially if you have many deep pages that aren't linked to from many locations.

Unless "the press" are going to be interested in your story probably not.

False. Certainly a link that says "Quality bathroom rugs" might get a few more clicks than "bathroomrugs.com" but a link is a link at the end of the day and that's how you get visitors to your site - links.

Search engines don't "penalise" you for what link text says.

If it's been "hijacked" you probably have far more serious problems than normal "rankings" going up and down (which is perectly normal).

You're right, it serves little value. They thing you should be measuring is "success", ie sales, enquiries or even people emailing you to say "thank you for a useful site"

ASP is a programming language, HTML is a markup language used to display web pages.

No!

No it is not.
It may help the "crawler" to locate pages in your site if your navigation proves a problem, however fixing the navigation, getting "deep" links or adding HTML sitemaps to you site will be FAR, FAR more beneficial to your site.

It can be useful IF and ONLY IF you have something to announce that is "newsworthy"

Hijackings were extremely rare and the issues that created the possibility were fixed some THREE years ago.

All pages are HTML when delivered to the user agent.

1. No its not that important to submit your website in yahoo directory. If you have that much money then yes you can submit it otherwise its not vital.
2. Submitting your sitemap to Google is good if you are finding some proble with indexing of your website pages..
3. Press releases are best to submit..
4. This is nothing such like that
5. You can find that in Google by putting in the keywords.
6. In SE reports you find out everthing related to website like PR, links, blogs reports , domain age, link popularity, website popularity etc.

"it doesn’t appear in the directory" have some reasons. Maybe your site content is not original, maybe your site time is short.
