multiple domain names and SEO

I have a client who has purchased about a dozen domain names for his web site. All are reasonable variations on the business's name. The client wants all the domain names to redirect to the same site, of course, and I guess the idea is that they will, in effect, all be forwarded to one "main" domain name. Does anyone know if there is any penalty from Google or other search engines for pointing too many domain names to a single website?

As far as I can tell, it gives you no advantage or penalty and I would say useless as well.

If the visitors are redirected, there will be no penalty for sure. If the sites are mirrored, there could be potential penalties.

There could be some potential benefit that a good domain may increase the rank of the pages. But not sure.

You need to setup all other domains as a 301 redirect to your main page.

If you use a proper 301 redirect then google will treat them all as ONE domain and award the same SEO ( so to speak ) across all domains.

However from what i understand only the main domain will appear in search properly.

We have like 300 different domain names all with a landing page, that when you click the link it takes you to the main site. Hasn't hurt us any.

If we follow the redirection rule as per the Google parameters then I think it will not be considered as penalty.
