Hello,
I am looking to buy one or two domains but want to know which one is better in SEO.
1. 2 years old domain with PR1.
2. 7 months old domain with PR3.
Both offer the same price.
Which one is better?
Thanks.

No the "age" doesn't matter, and the SGB PR value means nothing. So on the information given, both are equally useless!!

The biggest advantage in buying an old domain is the links the site already has.
See which one has more backlinks, and purchase it.

I would tend to agree with that, but really the best domain is the one that fits the site your making, no point getting a domain with some links if the domain doesnt fit the site !

Some people suggest domains that are at least 6-12 months old do better. Newer domains can get sandboxed. The 7 month old one is borderline. Pr3 would be nice if it did have a decent number of backlinks. Some domain names just sound better or have a certain ring to it too.

You can consider a couple of things.
  1. Domain Name (Check whether it is relevant)
  2. How many backlinks and where does it point to? If the majority points to the domain, I mean to 'whatever.com', it's fine, if not, meaning you get links to inner pages, i don't think it's a good idea. You can redirect it. But then again, you can lose credibility.
  3. TBPR is just a one signal out of 200 odd ranking criteria for 'Google' Nobody else give's a rat's posterior about it.

An older domain is usually always better but it also depend on what its been used for. For example if its had no content and has simply been left as with a holding page its like starting from scratch in Google's eyes.

First, forget about useless PR.
Second, the age of a domain only counts when it comes to user trust.

Domain age is only ONE of 200+ factors for ranking a website, check the back links of both domains, if the link has quality back links then you will get the PR juice of those back links on the next google update

Seeing how every body is convinced "age" is a factor. Would someone care to tell me, what is the "age" of the domain??

I am new to this but from what I have been reading. Good content, honest work and building relationships with your consumer base defeats all the little tricks people try to use to get better rankings. I think people should be focused on having quality service/products before they worry about how old a domain name is. Personally I would purchase a domain name that fits what I am doing - not the other way around.

Domain age matters a bit for Bing and Yahoo, but not on Google. Well if your target search engine is not Google, then I think the older one is better. And if you will target Google, then any one of them will do. The thing is, everything will depend on how well you optimize the new contents of the domain that you are going to buy.
