I am in charge of optimizing a website. I have a prepared a list of things that I need to do. I want you guys to add to it. It is a travel website. Incidentally, the owner of the site has a dated domain and his hosting is a free account. So I am trying to first acquire an appropriate hosting account. Here’s my list-Maximise link juice. Get appropriate keywords. Authenticate HTML/HTML tidy. Incorporate Google map on ‘find us’. Build sitemap.xml and robots.txt. Browse relevant directories. Anything else? Also, will I get brownie points for switching to Google analytics?

You are preparing for on page only? how about off page activities?

After deciding hosting, start with the Keyword Research. Once this part will complete, prioritize your keyword and use those keyword in content and title, meta tags, H1 tag. set up Google Analytics account and Google webmaster. creation of sitemap.xml and robots.txt. once all these steps completed, start with the off page activity, like Press release submission, Directory submission, Article posting, social bookmarking, blog posting, rss feed submission etc. Best of luck.

These are good SEO practices. You should also consider your niche and tailor your strategy to it.

Good starts for SEO work, you complete on page work then starts off page page work for your site.

First of all suggest proper keywords for your site (less competitive but having good searches). Don't forget about title tag which has enormous importance in on page optimization. Look after your content. Make it informative and unique with proper utilization of keywords within it. Check your internal linking structure. For off page try to get quality links for your site. Analyze competitors’ activities. Try to get links from your niche sites and authority sites.

Switching to Google Analytics is not a bad move, however if your client is using AwStats that could be enough also.

Do not forget about off-page SEO as well, directories are a little out-dated..
