SEO is a synthesis of onpage and off page optimization. And if I am not wrong, it is in a 25-75 ratio. Now, quality backlinks are the major components of off-page optimization. Thus, they are essential for good SERP rankings.

Anybody disagrees? Is this true?

Thanks a lot.

No! It's not even remotely close never mind true!!

There is no "ratio"

"OFF page optimisation" is actually Marketing.

Links are NOT essential in very many cases. Useful yes, but NOT essential.

Its all about quality content, of course its handy to have some good backlinks especially if they are highly competative niches.

But once you learn how to do SEO properly, you will realise the power of your content, the people who say its all about links are idiots !

Only if it is mint flavoured.

Ok so I google "Cumbria killings", when the news first broke how many links did it have? ZERO, now the telegraph has the number 1 spot, this is most likely due to them using my search term in their title, its what? 5 days old news, do you think google has found all the inlinks for this story? Of course not, google thinks this is most suited to my search terms.

You need to have both quality content and quality themed links with the correct anchor text to get your web pages up in the SERPs, but to speculate on the percentage or weight given to each area I don't think is helpful.

We cannot set a fixed ratio for the on-page and off-page things but yes, both are very important.

Ofcouse you are rite. Both are important. For a site we need to do both on and off page optimization . Without those we cant promote the site.

There is no ratio as such. But Google keeps changing the algorithms which can affect what holds more important than other factors.

Check this great link at SEOmoz
- it shows how google algo has changed over time.

Yes, SEO is a synthesis of onpage and off page optimization, but the onpage optimization is more important.

Nobody really knows the algorithm used by search engines so it's really hard to tell if there is a ratio - and if there is what the ratio is.

The guys at seomoz has tried to make an educated guess on google's algo and this is what they've come up with:

GoogScore = (KW Usage Score * 0.3) + (Domain Strength * 0.25) + (Inbound Link Score * 0.25) + (User Data * 0.1) + (Content Quality Score * 0.1) + (Manual Boosts) - (Automated & Manual Penalties)

So it's really hard to say what the core of SEO is. Maybe the core of SEO are the customers themselves - if we create sites that our targeted customers would want to visit and buy from and tell their friends so that they too will visit and buy from the site - then our SEO and marketing efforts would have been successful.

@thailandforum on page optimization for certain keyterms would probably be enough but if the niche is very competitive you would need to consider other factors - such as inbound links - in order to rank well. Also, they are saying that Google favors priority sites, they probably [I say probably because we really can't say what's going on in the minds of the google gods] think the telegraph is an authority when it comes to news that is why they are on the top of the search. You may also want to consider all the inbound links of the site as a whole.

I believe it 40-60. 40 % on page and 60% off page. It need good quality content to be included in google serp and quality links to get site index and given good reputation.
