Surely google is clever enough to index all your pages by just following all of your sites links. Does it really speed up or help with spiders crawling your site?

Not totally helps to increase rankings but a better visibility by SE, and sitemaps only informs the SE about any changes to your site.

Sitemaps are only important for indexing inner pages. If you have a huge site, then it's a good idea to use a sitemap for search engines. However, if it's a small site, then it doesn't matter.

Either way, backlinks can solve the problem of indexing. If you get backlinks to your pages, they'll get indexed without a sitemap.

Isn't the main reason for sitemaps to show pages within your site that are not linked from other pages in order for them to be crawled/indexed?

Sitemaps mean NOTHING! in getting stuff indexed faster etc.

ALL a sitemap is useful for to a searchengine is to TELL it where your pages are.

The ONLY useful use of a sitemap is to tell a SE about pages that it would otherwise not be able to find ( hidden pages , pages behind javascript links etc )

sure it is! Sitemap still be very useful now in doing SEO. All search engine prefer .xml sitemap. Sitemap can help search engine index your site better, and more quickly.

As far as I know and experienced, sitemap help the search engine bots to crawl websites (specially those with lots of pages) more faster compare to those who are not not using sitemap.

Sitemaps have been around longer than the xml cr4p webmasters put out for search engines these days. Sitemaps used to suppliment site navigation for humans; remember humans? The fact that search bots find them useful to hit unindexed pages is a bonus.

Are sitemaps important? Yes, of course they are. Think of them as a table of contents for people to use to drill into your site.

I don't believe sitemaps increase the speed in which your site is indexed.
