I've got a fairly nice site that has a great page rank. The company has allowed me to use backlinks in their nav bar. Unfortunately their nav is using crappy image maps (old old old dream weaver "hot spots".

The good is that this site has a great page rank and would be beneficial to my site if I can link it...

As far as SEO goes... will search engines ever pick up on an image map/hotspot?

I know it's probably better than nothing... I don't think I can talk them into doing a regular text link.

Yes!
But of course you should be able to see that is the case if the site you are talking about is being indexed!

we get a back link by image but its better that we get a back link for a specific keyword

Link is always better than image.. Yes, there are some people who search for images but that's only in google.. not in other search engines.. link is better

That's what I've read that it is use-less.

The site that I want to backlink me is indexed, but my link through hotspot never shows up.

I think it might be because I left off the trailing slash?

Its better that you use of text instead of images, But if you should use of images on your website, Use of Alt attribute for them.

I honestly hope that you made a mistake with your placement of 'images' and 'text' words. If you wrote this knowingly, this is one of the worst advices I have ever seen. This is completely wrong. Text is always better than images when it comes to on-page optimization.

yeah very good idea to get traffic through images so you should save your images on site with keyword names

If you want to rank better in google using the Back link then you should try Text backlink.
And if you want to get more direct visitors then you should try Image backlink.

Back link with image is fine but its better if you use your keyword as anchor text with your back link
