Hello friends,
The only two SEO methods I still use to get traffic are:
1. Submit my new page(s) or blog article(s) to social bookmarking sites.
2. Submit articles to article directories.
Some days I get more traffic and some days I get less traffic on my sites. When I check on my hosting stats, I see a few clicks from some article sites that I submit my articles to, and none from social bookmarking sites.
What did I do wrong?
How do I get and maintain traffic?
What else should I do?
Any advice is appreciated.

Neither of those "activities" are "optimising".

They are BOTH promotion.

Articles marketing is good way to gain good result such as backlinks, traffic and high ranking in search engines.

First you have to know what is your goal like for example getting backlinks you should do article submissions or forum posting, getting high traffic you should do some social networking etc. There are ups and downs in every marketing avenue

For article marketing, unless you create some really great content I doubt visitors will come just for the sake of clicking on a link that has a bad title and content.

Whatever you are doing is not wrong method for generating traffic. But before doing all these off page techniques, you should do proper on page optimization and it really works by targeting your keywords by doing anchor text.

I've found submitting to the top for each category is the best...by top I mean the authority sites in each field, whether article sites, directories, blogs (for commenting) or forums for posting...they seem to stick around longer than the new ones.

you should do onpage optimization for keywords that get about 4,000-15,000 hits per month in google. with a good onpage seo you should be on first page of google for keywords that get about 4k-15k per month.

Create a few blogs around your site and promote them (use non competitive key words on your blogs but the subject shoud be similar to your main site). Link the blogs between each other and the last link to your site.

Making blogs is a good idea but promoting them is not easy. Maybe you should consume a lot of time for promoting them and then you don't have time for promoting your main website

According to me Article is the best way. But you should post one article in not more than 5 or 10 directorys only. It will maintain the rank of your keywords.

if you want your site traffic is maintain for this you want to do some work for this like social bookmarking in good pr sites and do some work in facebook and twitter and my space. if you do good work in social bookmarking than you get good traffic for your sites and facebook and twitter also give traffic for your site.

For me the best method that works for me is updating the content of my site regularly and each time I do updating, I submit it to dofollow social bookmarking sites, web directory. I also do microblogging. I use twitter and tumblr.
