Could anybody tell me if having the url's of images on my website, in the sitemap.xml would have benefits in terms of seo or se ranking, or even whether indexing of these url's would improve in any way? The reason in my thinking is that a fair chunk of my traffic sometimes comes via google images.

I did a search for info on this subject but no luck yet. Any opinions would be appreciated.

I've never tried to do such a thing, but if you're looking for traffic from images, then don't do it.

The reason is because you want to give alternative text to the image, so that people using image search engines can find your image.

It's best to add a link ( with an image on the web page) , to your sitemap, so the search engine crawlers can crawl the web page and find the image to add it to its image search engine.

Also, make sure that you've submitted your sitemap to Google webmaster tools. Good luck.

if you're looking for traffic from images, you can add image link to your sitemap. If you do not know how to write, you can see the google help.

Generating traffic through image is really a difficult task. The images of you site will get crawled in any ways. Even if you will not include in you sitemap. Even if you had added link of your site images it doesn't matter.

I am not sure if inserting images on your sitemap can help you to index your images faster. As Google has different bots and Google web bot only read data from sitemaps and Google Web bot doesn't index images. It has another bot.
