Yes, hack into their server and read the logs.

Or, you could not worry about such things and just focus on doing the best job possible generating traffic for your site.

There are plenty of tools that will report on the traffic of different sites. They're easy enough to find with a little searching. None though are ever going to be accurate. They can give you a shallow picture of a site's traffic, but they can't see everything. Like Abel said you have to have access to the server to get the real picture of traffic.

You can't trace down exactly the traffic volumes of your competitors; but you can get some idea with this tools:

you can use semrush for checking competitors detail like keywords, ranking, but not for total traffic.

You can't get a access of a particular web site so that you will analysis the traffic of your competitor. but you can do the competition back link for your which comes from the competitors web site. Like how he building a link towards his site so that you also understand how should you make the changes in your strategy.

If you want to spy your competititors, you can use SEO Spy Glass of SEO Powersuite.
