At the moment I have a domain which is .co.uk and is targetting UK users but I want to target US and UK users. Would a .co.uk have the same impact on US users or do I need a .com domain aswell to make a bigger impact on US traffic.

If you have a .co.uk domain, chances are it will rank in www.google.co.uk more than www.google.com; but still you can rank it at Google.Com (I handled some .ca websites before; but I still able to rank at Google.Com)

I definitely agree with you. There's no need to change the domain. just continue gathering backlinks and promoting your site globally and you can be able to have a good ranking.

The benefit of using a com over co.uk when aiming at the american market is that americans are more likely to click the com, a co.uk they may just disregard, as for seo and serps, its just the same.

Well having that domain, it just show where that business is base or what country. For me i guess it doesn't matter as long as you give a proper and best promotional ads to that site, its already fine. It doesn't need to justify the fact for many people doesn't even care to its domain extension. For me its informative to know the primary info from a certain company, and that's already promotion.

as long as you generate a lot of backlinks to your site it won't matter much. some people hire a virtual assistant to do that..

I guess it would work more in UK since its UK domain but still depend in your hosting and where you put your site.

^Hi Full House, pass it along, whatever it is that your smoking. Google doesn't give a toss about your hosting aslong as you serve pages reasonably quickly, nor do they care where you are hosted, they don't care what color underwear webmasters wear either, the list is endless.

You can optimie it for both countries but you should know that you see your website on UK in better position on Google as your domain is specified for UK . But optimizing it for both countries is available by getting backlinks from Uk ans US websites.

most user search anything on search engines by keywords not by domain. so I think you should not worry about domain name. you should focus on your backlinks, promotion of your website. and you should promote it globally.

You're going to have a harder time getting a .co.uk domain to rank in the US. Google automatically assumes a ccTLD is targeting that country. I haven't checked lately but it used to be that you couldn't even set the Geo targeting setting in WMT for ccTLD domains.

Regardless, even if you manage to get your .co.uk domain to rank in Google.com, people in the US will be less likely to click on it.

If you REALLY want to target US and UK visitors, you'll need links from sites targeting Google.com AND Google.co.uk. It's difficult to rank well in multiple views of Google.

I would consider getting a .com (neutral) domain, redirecting the URLs from your old domain to the new domain, and build links from other sites targeting Google.com. Targeting Google.com (global traffic) and will get you traffic from both UK and US. But expect traffic to drop before it gets better.

.co.uk would work but if you have a .co.us domain then it would be the best option. or you would targating this into your keywords. It would be the another option.
