.edu links are no more valuable than links from an equivalent .com, .net, .org, etc. Google is TLD agnostic. They could care less about the TLD.
There was a time many years ago when .gov and .edu sites where the best linked sites on the web (because lets face it, all of the original sites on the web were .gov and .edu sites so naturally they had the most leaks in the early years of the web). Also PR used to carry a lot more weight in Google's algorithms than it does today. So people used to seek out high PR sites for links which meant getting links from .edu and .gov sites, the only high PR sites on the web at the time.
That is not the case today...
