Reverse SEO is majorly referred as reputation management solution. In case you have a website which is not ranking well on the search engines. If the major problem is with negative links on the top result page of SE, then reverse SEO is your savior. It helps in online reputation. I had availed of this service because my site was seen on the last few pages of Google result pages. The first pages had negative remarks about my sites. Through reverse SEO, the negative links were pushed back to get my site on the top of the engine result pages.

Reverse SEO is one of the stupidest things recently declared by a lot of people that really don't have a clue and should not be offering services to clients..

It is more properly called ORM or Online Reputation Management.. There is nothing reverse about it other than a casual misunderstanding of the way things work.. Reverse SEO implies that you are doing something to undo the SEO work already done on a web site.. Short of removing links this simply isn't true..

Reverse SEO is the process of preventing post negative reviews, awards or bad publicity to appear on results pages above on a company or individual, etc. gradually pushing bad publicity is the second, third, fourth and consecutive pages . It is part of online reputation management.

As far as im concern it is not a black hat SEO. But I dont think it is a big thing also. It is just some thing that doesn't really matter in SEO at all.

Reverse Seo is definitely not a black hat SEO.
@Suichiro: it does matter on SEO if you will talk about branding.
If there are negative reviews about your site or sevice and will rank first in google, rather than your site then that's the time you will do Reverse SEO. Bringing down those negative reviews and putting up your reputation again on SEs.

It actually talks about branding, and reputation and is not actually Reverse SEO, it is called ORM...

These terminologies are made by people who wants the attention on them, These so-called SEOs invent some theories and publish it in blogs and forums and at last it becomes a myth.
As far as I know the so called 'Reverse SEO' is the method of helping the site-owner to rank high for negative keywords by writing good on third-party blogs or forums which links to the main website.
Google doesn't even care the people who spend money to destroy the competitors site.

I've been asked to do it myself for a couple of companies. I think there's a definite need for it for some, more shadier, outfits.

A company, who shall remain nameless, approached me to do it to a newspaper article that gave them really bad press.

After researching the issue, it seems that achieving this is very close to being impossible. Google's Matt Cutts has admitted that technically it could be possible, but to do it you'd need a bunch of black listed URLs, several link farms etc etc. There are hackers selling black listed URLs for quite a bit of money, the theory being that you could do some kind of redirect from that URL to the site you want to hurt.

Like I said, I looked into it, but it really is a ton of work for potentially zero results.
