I do this as well. What happens is that you not only expand your site - you then get referral traffic from these article directories as well. It's a win-win situation.
i also agree with blue dreamer you can update your content and submit them to different article directories thats really useful you can boost your SERP.
Both are the techniques of SEO and both are good but blog commenting is more powerful than article submission, best way to get the backlinks for your website.
For me, article submissions can be both a good source of backlinks as well as website traffics. There are some do follow, fast approving article directory sites that bring little traffics. There are also some article sites that is no follow and hard to be approve, but brought fair traffics once an article was approved.
Always submit your articles on pr sites,every website has his own submission guidelines,so prepare a diffrent format of article for diffrent article sites.
