Absolute or Relative Links? What's best for SEO?

I have always read about the benefits of each...

Rather than give my opinion and set direction on the question - I just want to leave the answer up to you.

So what is the best linking strategy when designing keep it all relative to the site or always 'beat the path' to absolute linking?

I appreciate all feedback on this as I am rebuilding my new design site.

It does NOT matter in the slightest.

Chrishirst is correct. No difference from an SEO perspective. It can make a difference from other perspectives.

For example, it's easier to scrape and republish a site with relative URLs. Scraping a site with absolute URLs means they have to modify all of the links in the code.

absolute is using a fully qualified URL:
HTML Code:
<a href="http://www.website.tld/folder/pagename.ext">text</a>
relative is using a path and resource name URI only:
HTML Code:
<a href="/folder/pagename.ext">text</a>

user agents will "normalise" relative URIs to a fully qualified URL by prepending the current protocol and server name to the relative resource URI.

you cannot build "relative links"!

They can ONLY EVER BE ON YOUR OWN SITE!!!!!!

There is no such thing as building relevant links!
Chrishirst was right, it doesn't matter at all. There is no difference in terms of SEO.
