If I had a banner on another website with a link back to my website and the alternative text "cheap dog toys", would that be just as effective as a text link that says "cheap dog toys"?

Of course!

In fact an image link might be more effective. After all "A picture is worth a thousand words".

And if the picture says to the customer "THAT'S what I'm looking for" a potential sale is on the way.

Text link and banner link we can't make difference because both importance is as equal for search engine.

I'm actually referring to the "seo value" of the link.

If "cheap dog toys" are keywords in your website YES.

Well definitely yes they have the same backlinks. And link on it has the greater possibility to be click, and in banner ads it shows the imaginative view on what your ads want to inform.

No its not, its' not just as effective as text backlink. Having an image link is more valuable rather than just having a simple link towards your site.

Who knows and quite frankly who cares. The so called SEO "value" is not visible, tangible or measurable. It may not even exist in reality.

Traffic or conversion values on the other hand is ALL of those.

There is not even any way of being confident that when you do link bomb your way to that magical "first page result" that your page will get any visitors never mind any converting visitors.

What do you when the word/phrase you're chasing turns out to be useless, or you change whatever your pages are targeting, do you start again from scratch by chasing different links in the same places for the same site?

Both things add value to your site and also an effective way for building backlinks.

Yes, an image with the right alt text can be effective from SEO point of view. An image speaks much more than the text link. It will also drive a huge referral traffic to the website.
