I was recently chatting with someone and they were talking about for every 10 dofollow backlinks you are getting, you should have 1 nofollow link. The thinking behind this is that it appears more natural to the search engines.

What are your thoughts on this, does this really help?

having 10 back links it not too many to count as spam so no need to get 1 nofollow link.

Do we really know how the search engines "think"?

Is there any concrete information substantiating the natural versus un-natural theory concerning link counts?

To JDF: Jim's right. There are no proof on that type of rumors. Getting 10 dofollow links per day is not bad neither the links with nofollow attribute. What matters most is these links have great relevancy to your site to ensure that your inbound links are in great quality.

Giving this a little more thought.....
When we ping our blog...we send out several hundred pings.....
We could get hundreds of links in just a few days.....

If we post every day and ping every day...that could be a ton of links in a week....

Does anyone complain of Google dropping their site for "un-natural" links?

I have not heard of that happening.....

I think that a link is still a link, even if it's no-follow. No-follow links simply means no Page rank is transferred to your site.

I'll take it especially if that no-follow link can lead to actual visitors or increased crawling/indexing for my websites.

sounds like complete nonsense to me. Why on earth would Google implement something like that?

A couple of years back I got over 400 links in the space of 2 days from a press release sent out to a bunch of blogs, as far as i know, none were nofollow. But the page wasn't penalised at all - it shot to number 1 for it's keywords.

I really don't think that makes any sense.

I certainly havent heard of a case of being penalised for looking unnatural but does a handful of well placed inbound nofollow links add weight rather than just being redundant links?

I can see the thinking behind it, but am still sitting on the fence with this one.

As per my knowledge I don't think there is any such ratio of 1o dofollow and 1 nofollow or such. All I know is google does not crawl nofollow link but other then google there are many search engine which crawls and Index's.

I think there is no need to follow this 10:1 ratio, If you want ranking results then you should keep going to take links from quality pages whether it is dofollow or nofollow.

i dont know if it sounds meaningful but what i believe is have a limited number of links to good sites and just enough dont have more links and again balancing with nofollow links is not such a good idea imo

Nofollow has no value for a site, because search engine spider will not visit this link.

I never read anywhere that 1 nofollow link required when you get 10 dofollow links. In my opinion don't do more backlinking process, that gives you more backlinks in a very less time. Also, do not get links from link farm sites.

Yeah , If a site have only dofollow backlinks then it is a matter of suspect for google.
having at least 10-20 percent of backlinks nofollow will help to prevent from google banning.

To add to my succinct reply let's take a stroll along Logic Alley.

The rel=nofollow attribute was developed to help combat the rising cess pool of blog comment spam, so would it not be equally possible that having ANY "nofollow" links could be construed as you have been "dropping links" to your pages where they are NOT wanted?
