Hello all,

I am targetting a two word keyphrase example "Super Mario"

Say my site was called "The Super Mario" and I had exchanged links with 20 sites linking back to me with link anchor text "The Super Mario", would that harm the links performance on seo because it doesnt just read "Super Mario" ?

I have previously been told words like "the" are ignored by search engines so im hoping that someone linking to me under anchor text "The Super Mario" would just add to my sites weight for the keyphrase "Super Mario" ?

Is there anyone who might know better than me who could give me some advice on this.

I think that Google is pretty smart when it comes to things like articles. But the word "the", the definite article, can bring a totally different meaning to a phrase.

I searched a second ago for "inevitable" and "the inevitable" and received 2 completely different set of listings. the first brought up, as you'd expect, dictionary meanings etc. The second brought up first a band, called "The Inevitable".

So, clearly "the" isn't ignored. But I would imagine it totally depends on the context. In your case, I would say that it probably wouldn't make too much difference. Searching in Google.co.uk for "Super Mario" and "The Super Mario" brings up very similar results.

So what about the other hundreds of ptential phrases?

And of course you are assuming that the links are of any "value" at all, which is highly unlikely.

edgray, good test idea. your right, it does yield diff results, however not overly different with that particular keyphrase which is kind of a relief I guess.

chrishirst, what makes you say that about the links? would linkbacks from other relevant sites with anchor text as the phrase im targetting not help?

Who knows?

Only google know what links "count" and ones that don't, and the ones you can get easily are not likely to count.

Get links on the basis of the traffic they may send not some dubious or possibly non-existent "search engine" value.

When you are targeting a two word key phrase that doesn't mean that you have to disregard the other keyphrases.

The word "the" isn't ignored by search engines, they shows 2 diffrent results for keyphrases with "the" and without "the".

I rarely use the word "the" within my keywords. Even ordinary people tend to search for something without the word "the"; not unless it is a movie or book title; the word "the" is important to add as a part of keyphrase.

Hi, i think it depends on your site keyword in which 'the' should be important or not.You have to check out that on Google adwords or from some the site, 'the' word should have proper importance or not in eyes of google.
