well neither really apply to SEO. Both have their places in terms of website promotion tho. I think article submission is totally overrated. Press releases can be a great way to spread the word about your site's content tho.

I think both are has it's own important in SEO. Press release, news release, media release, or press statement is a written or recorded communication directed at members of the news media for the purpose of announcing something claimed as having news value. Article Submission is the best to get contextual link. Article Submission have the more importance in gogle's algorithm because first your giving the authentic content and second the promotion of the product which can very much helpful for the visitors.

Press Release can be done only whenever you have introduced new products, features etc.

But article can be done regularly to obtain backlinks as well as to drive traffic. It is the best method to obtain the contextual links.

It is entirely depend upon your website. Also, articles can be prepared but not the press releases unless you have something to showcase about your site in the news.

I would prefer article submission more over press release submissions.

Submitting articles to well known and highly trafficked article directories like articlesbase.com and ezinearticles.com and then adding back links is a great way to increase search engine visibility and to just in general drive traffic to your site. It is definitely not something you should overlook.

content is king of seo. if you are having your own content posted in the very right place could change your serps not in months but in days. keep on posting articles but make sure you are posting your own content in articles.

Both gives SEO benefits. But article submission gives faster result in rankings especially for approved links than in press releases.
