Google consider the age of a domain in fact and the domain age would give more legitimacy to the website's content in the eyes of the Google search engine, the newly registered websites (domain names) have a maximum chance of being used for spam.

Yes, Google always provide first priority to age of the domain because it believes that old aged domains would has some good quality content as it lasts for long time.

But as mentioned above buying an old domain and implementing your new content is not advisable.

In my opinion, Domain name age is only one of the many vital elements search engine uses to index and rank the websites. The older a domain name, more is the significant of its relevancy provided the domain name age and website meets all search engine criteria.

The most obvious advantage of having an older website is that the site may have been added to the major search engines prior to the advent of paid inclusion or paid listings, and has thus been Grandfathered into the search engine databases without having to pay. In the beginning, it was quick, easy, and free to get your site listed in Yahoo!, even in more than one directory. Not any more. Within the LookSmart system, Grandfathered commercial sites can have several if not tens or hundreds of individual pages listed for free. This gives them an obvious advantage over new sites trying to gain a foothold in a directory which follows the one-business, one-listing rule for the most part, and which charges a fee for each page added as well as a fee for each click-through to your website. There was even a time when you could email GoTo.com "now known as Overture.com" and get your site listed for free on their search engine. As each of the major search engines moved to requiring a fee for listing your site, they each stood by their original content providers us old webmasters.

There are numerous things Google consider while ranking a website. Domain age is one of them.
If your site is very well optimized but its domain age is not so old, then you would probably loose the chance of being on the top.
Google has mentioned the domain age criteria in its blog also.

There was a Matt Cutts video where he said that domain ago has almost nothing to do with rankings, but I think he was just 'bluffing' there and it is a big thing

Older domains are easily indexed by Google as compared to new domains. Keyword rich old domains helps a lot in SEO process.

i definently think it does have infludence. Even if it's only the fact that newer website can take 6 months or longer to achieve any kind of decent search ranking. You also have to start the massive task of content and link building from scratch.

It does matter,
1. By the age domain the Google understand the investment and the Quality of the site whether it is a spammer or not and
2. For the old age site the Google Rank the site as well.

I agree with chrishirst. Domain name age is not important for SEO.
