I'm curious why people who are supposedly involved in search are incapable of using a Search Engine to look for answers before begging for handouts??

A canonical link is a url declared at the top of the page to alert search engines which version of the page to index. For example, a page might appear as page.html and also page.html?sid=asdf314159265. You can prevent search engines from indexing these two links separately by making the canonical link page.html. (If both are indexed, they might share PageRank.)

When there is canonical tag used, then its easy for you to decide that which url to pick.that is it helps you to make choice from multiple urls that redirects to the same page.

The canonical tag attribute is similar in many ways to a 301 redirect from an SEO perspective. In essence, you're telling the engines that multiple pages should be considered as one (which a 301 does), without actually redirecting visitors to the new URL (often saving your dev staff considerable heartache). The Canonical tag is just for engines, and it still allows you to separately track visitors to the unique URL versions.
