Fantastic forum you gents have here, there is a wealth of information.
I am a bit overwhelmed and interested in where I should start? (on page optimization, off page optimization,
link building etc). Does the 80/20 rule apply to seo? Should I focus 80% of my resources on one key area?
If so which is that? Appreciate any advice you can provide, thankyou.

First you have to do all on page SEO for your site. After that you should move to off page optimization.

For off page optimization you must start with search engine submissions then move to other methods also like directory submissions, article submissions etc.

The very first thing you need to do is situate your meta tags.
Go to Google Webmaster Tools and search for keywords relative to your site.

I guess you are talking about 20% on page and 80% off page, better start on on page to target your keyword properly and place it where Google will recognize it easily then focus on link building for a long run.

In SEO first of all you can make meta tags of your website. and second thing that your website content is very important so must be unique and relevant to your website. and update it regularly and make XML site map for your website. and do off page work like directory , article submission and do social bookmarking for your website it is the few thing of seo work.

I think you can start seo from onpage , like meta tag optimization, keyword research etc and then you can start offpage including blog and forum postings, directory submissions , social bookmarking etc..
