I had a meeting with another SEO consultant last week and was talking about NoFollow vs. DoFollow links. He suggested that Google counts some NoFollow links, such as links from facebook. He doesn't give any solid reasons on that. Does anyone have a better idea of whether Google really counts NoFollow links and if so, how does it decide which NoFollow links to count and which not? Thanks.

yes, i have checked that Google counts the Links from Facebook, provided it's been liked by many people...

Google has counted Twitter, Facebook and Articlesbase (all nofollow) in my webmaster tools, it's weird but true. I'm certain that they helped me rank on SERPs so I'm going with the mindset that they do pass juice. I highly doubt anyone can give, with 100% certainty, a final answer on this (besides Google).

Only google can disclose this. IMHO google does count some high quality no follow links from facebook and other very much popular sites.

No, link juice applies to the site in question recommending and vouching for your site! This is not true of a nofollow link, however google does follow a nofollow link in the sense the spiders will follow a link to it's destination - this means your site could still be indexed from a nofollow link! i read an interested article about it, just can't find it anymore... but it was a test with a page which only had nofollow links pointing on it and it was still indexed by Google. It's easy to do it again by yourself.
Now there's some differences between follow/no follow, search engines certainly don't give the same value for both but spiders follow the link for sure.

Ok, almost everyone gets this wrong..

Links contain more components than JUST PR.. Therefore they can be used for more than just passing pagerank.. Anchor text is not page rank, but a link can pass that value.. Context is not pagerank, but link context can be taken from the words surrounding a link.. Segmentation is not pagerank but where a link appears on a page can indicate its value.. Velocity is not pagerank, but how fast you gain links can be a factor.. Social sharing is not pagerank but having your link retweeted and liked on facebook can be an indication on the social reach that your link may have..

And it goes on and on and on.. Nofollow "only" blocks pagerank.. For all those people that stopped getting links from sources that used nofollow, I thank you and hope that you continue down that blind path, you are making it easier for the rest of us..

The nofollow link attribute only has to do with preventing the passing of useless toolbar PR, and nothing else. Also, as an SEO consaltant, you should be aware the there is NO dofollow link attribute.

What he's referring to is the latest buzz in the IM community. What he's talking about is the fact that Google now uses social signals for ranking websites. You can find information on that by googling "Webmaster Videos" and then clicking on the first result from Youtube. The video is by Matt Cutts and is worth watching.

I don't think the giant counts all nofollow links though. I personally guess that some low quality nofollow links might hurt your site, or at least doesn't help with anything.
