I have a forum that has been around for a while but is now dead. The point of the site is the forum, but I put a gimic tutorial thing on the index page, then the recent forum topics run along the right side and there are buttons everywhere to get to the forum.

It was my attempt to make it a little special, so it's not just a forum like the majority of similar sites.

However, TycoonTalk is just straight up a forum and it's doing good.
Then again, Digital Point and SitePoint don't have their forums on their index page and they do ok to.

Which way do you guys prefer?
