my dad needs a new website. This is the old one. The SEO is awful. I told him not to go with the designer but he would not listen.

We're trying to re-do the website so it has good out of the box seo and hopefully get a few decent leads through. So, wordpress, Joomla, something else? We don't have huge money to spend on this so however I get this done it has to be done right.

What is the best direction to go in?

it doesn't matter, any CMS system can be optimised. Wordpress I would say is the easier one, from a user standpoint, and has some SEO plugins ready for use.

Really the CMS matters not when it comes to SEO.

Wordpress is a great platform for websites and can be optimized very well. There are a lot of useful plugins that will make your life easier

Matt Cutts has a great video from a talk he did at Wordcamp about wordpress and google.

There is also a very detailed and comprehensive write up on Yoast about wordpress and SEO. It is called "the Definitive Guide to Higher Rankings for Your Blog.

If you use Wordpress you can get a good seo plugin to get all the features like title tag etc. However, the main problem I found with Wordpress is that - although you CAN set the internal urls to have keywords, Wordpress states that this can slow down the website if you don't start a url with a numberic such as page number, date etc.

Definitely wordpress as it is complete customisable and also if set up correctly will allow for growth. The one thing i would say is to plan what you need from a CMS before you look for solutions. If you have any advanced requirements you may find that one platform out ranks another.

I would recommend wordpress as out of the box seo is great, but can be improved. SEO plugins will allow you to add custom title and meta tags to each page, and also make sure your post url's are friendly for seo.

With joomla you can specify the extension of each page but with SEO add-ons such as RSSEO you get detailoed information about each page where you can improve on this but also create a site map that you can submit onto your google webmaster account.
