Content is king? but how can it help me?

I was just reading the stickied thread "Making Your Site Bigger = More Backlinks" and VirtuosiMedia explains how content is what makes a site successful when it comes to links and therefore ranking.
My website is a shopping site that is completely product run (in my case, office supplies). How on earth can a website that is not a blog/news site or forum have fresh updated content? My products don't change much in a year.
Any advice would be appreciated.

What they mean by "Content is King" is actually multiple things, wrapped into one package.
For instance keyword density is a factor, but a small one when trying to convert. In the end a person will be clicking your link, product, etc, and thus you will need to have content that is written in an attractive manner, allowing your visitor the best possible experience on your site, to ensure quality.

It is true that content is king and frequent updates is a good help to have a good content, but it is actually not necessary at all.

I have a number of static brochure sites that are not changed more than once every year/two years and they do well in the serps - whilst fresh content may give your site a boost (especially for news type sites) it is not always necessary for other sites. Maybe it depends on your competition?
You may - possibly - want to add some content with useful keywords at the bottom of your home page - so users see the pictures but search engines have some text to index properly.

Even though your site is dominated by products is there any reason why you can write descriptive text to help people decide which product is the right one for them? Content does not specifically mean articles or blog posts. In fact content doesn't even have to be text. An interactive game is content. A video is content. Lots of things count as content.
You could add more to your product descriptions and do more to encourage product reviews.
There's no reason why you couldn't start a blog if you wanted. It doesn't have to be about your products directly, but it could talk about them indirectly. Some of your products lend themselves to short tutorials, though for many it would be hard to write much about.
How about adding something to the site letting your customers share some of the things they do with your products. You have a section for books and pads. I would think some of your customers are using them to sketch. You could let your customers upload their sketches and even have the community vote which is the best. Maybe each month the best sketch gets some free art supplies. Similarly if your customers are writing stories they could share those stores.
You could let customers share images of their offices, featuring your furniture of course. You could even find images of other people's offices and post those. Posts about feng shui might fit here. A post about how furniture arranged in an office helps foster or hinder productivity.
You have a catering section which opens you up anything food related. How about videos showing your or your employees using your products to cook different recipes.
The point is to be creative. There are almost always ways to add content to any site. It's not about writing to promote your products, but rather writing (or creating some other kind of content) around your products. Think about the will it blend videos. They're videos where someone places random things into a blender to see what happens. People found them humorous and they sold a lot of blenders. It was a creative way to promote a product that most people would have thought you can't create content around.

Golden Rules:
- Never use abstract language on your website unless you are talking about such a subject.
- Be concise in your writing, positive and to the point
- Use appropriate links from your content, wherever required. For instance, a person may be interested in learning about natural stones and gem resources in India, from a section talking about types of gems available.
- Put your self in the visitors shoes to present the right information at every step.
- Do not cram loads of information in a single page and one heading: If possible, use subheads and divide your topics. What is the purpose of the site? Your subject and target should determine the word limit. Generally, 400-500 word write-ups are ideal. For more informative subjects, a volume of 1000-1200 words should be the upper limits.

Contents are very helpful in stay people to our site or blog. If the content is not good so by promotion you will get the visitors but visitors will not again come back.

Well, you can always write quality content articles about your shopping site and post it on article directories. You will definitely get backlinks and traffic to your website. See, content is king even if it is not on your website.

You are selling something, so you can add a blog for your website, updating some product reviews and news in your industry.

Content is still important especially for shopping sites since there are various eCommerce sites out there. You need to make sure that you use accurate keywords, meta descriptions, keywords in the URL, and title tags to help make sure consumers looking for your products find your site. Depending on what eCommerce shopping cart / platform you use, these features should be included to help you manage your site and products. Here at Dydacomp, we have seen our clients benefit from: - XML sitemaps
- Breadcrumb navigation
- URL rewrite
- Fully Editable Meta Tags
- Alt, Page, and Title Tags
There are many other things you can do but this should help you get started!

Yes, it is true that content is king. This is perhaps the single most important aspect of ranking your website highly on the search engines. For content optimization, there are mainly four factors:
1. Heading Tags
2. Special Text (bold, colored, etc.)
3. Inline Text Links
4. Keyword Density
