My question is.....

Why are so many top ranking websites use table layouts when every where I read and everything I see says table layouts are BAD "use CSS".

by top ranking I dont mean sites like "target.com, GM.com, etc..."

just one example, ITChair.com ranks 6th out of 70 mil for "los angeles SEO" or webtraffic2night.com, another prominent site in the SEO biz uses tables.

Now I know, the layout has very little to do with the ranking but... why would these fellas who obviously know their stuff not do CSS layout and instead stick with the annoying table layout. THEY ARE PROS FOR GODS SAKE! so why? is it to hide some kind of SEO keyword stuffing or something like that.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Nope, the layout has NOTHING AT ALL "ranking

Agreed that the layout has very little, if anything, to do with your rankings. It makes the search engine spiders do a little more work (instead of pulling it out into the CSS) but probably not going to hurt.

You should focus on something else, not the layout which is not that important

yeah use CSS, this is what the guidelines that is recommended to follow, the sites you mentioned that are ranked well has some other more strong reasons to get higher rank, google can't give them lower depending upon their layout,

They have done a lot of Deep Linking for the keywords that they are targeting and they've been doing Link Building for that keyword for a long time now...

You right this is very much important thing but lots of people cannot get to this science easily.
