I have a (vbulletin) forum I used to run with over 50,000 topics.

I shut the site down several years ago.

I was wondering what would happen to my SEO if I started a new website (new domain and all), set up a vBulletin forum again and imported all that data to the new forum.

Would this count FOR or AGAINST me, and Why?

not a good idea if you release the entire contents at once. You can import a few topics a day ..

WHAT exactly has SEO got to do with it??

the questions should be about whether the website USERS are going to be interested in the information that the forum threads contain.

first off: Let's assume that all members will find this data valuable.

---

Next phase of the decision making process:

According to my understanding of SEO (which is little), dumping a whole bunch of data to a site [in the form of vBulletin threads] would be beneficial to a site, as that data will be indexed by spiders in SE's

However, it could act AGAINST you (as I think crama09 may be aware) if you were to just dump that data all at once.

what's the trade-off here, according to MSN, Yahoo, Google?

Not sure how you have come to the conclusion that it would be "beneficial" to the site.

SEs index PAGES and it matters not whether there is 30 or 30.000 pages on a particular parent URI, each page is an individual entity and are "valued" on their own merit.

There is no advantage having a lot of pages purely for the sake of having them.
If those pages are not earning links they will be pretty much ignored by SEs anyway.

I guess it will not provide you any benefits for it...You should pay attention to towards new topics instead of taking old contents into your new forum..

If you think the content of the forum is useful for your site visitors, you can goahead and open up the forum by all means. Promote it. The more people come to your forum and keep it alive the moe frequent the google comes to your forum to crawl the new threads.

Goodluck!

I don't there is a benefits in it as chris have said. And as you've mention,
if its about several years ago already, do you think content from that forum would still be valuable and reliable?
