Should I hire an SEO or optimize my website myself? I really want to get some good rankings for my site but I don't have a lot of money. Can I realistically expect to get some decent rankings without hiring a professional
SEO to do it for me?

Since you do not have a lot of money you can do it by yourself first if you have time.

I would not recommend to do it yourself. you can make mistakes .. best would be to hire someone. if you still want to do it yourself, read a lot first

Do it yourself, it's cheaper. And also most SEO companies are scams, and run by a bunch of idiots that don't know anything about SEO.

Although, if the person is too lazy and doesn't want to learn Search Engine Optimization, they should hire a well known company.

Or, just give up.

If you don't have lots of money to hire a SEO specialist, then you may try doing it your self. It might be hard at first, but if you focus your self you might achieve what you want. It'll surely take some time but it'll be worth it if you put some efforts in doing so.

You may want to ask the JC Penny staff what they would do if the had a "do over". They are a lot of fly by night companies offering this service. Even the big guys get taken for a ride now and then.

Learn how to do it yourself, then when ever you need seo done on a website in the future, you will have the knowledge to do it yourself and save loads of money. I would suggest you take a look at such websites like seobook.com for advice and tips.

Ofcourse you can do it all by yourself and yet see improvements in the rankings. I would say start with less tedious seo tasks and then move up the ladder.

It's just that sometimes it makes sense to outsource some of the seo work, like directory submissions.

Yes start with the meta tags/title tag, and add your main keyword you wish to target for your website at the begining. For example, if you have a dog training website, then your first word in the title tag should be dog training, and the same for the description and keyword tags.

Dog training should always be the first to appear. Also try and optimize each page for one keyword only and not multiple keywords, this will bring you the best results for positioning and pagerank with google for sure.
