Obviously I can use the google keyword tool but that just tells you the number of searches. How do you tell how competitive a keyword is?

you can make a search and see how many result are.. then analyze the competition and see what they did to get up

I think to know how competitive a keyword is, you need to consider many enements, number of daily searches, total related pages on search engines, how many top level domain names contain the keyword, etc. And i think there should be some tools can help you do this, maybe you should check it on google.

there is a green bar beside number of searches which gives you number of comeptitors

It does not tell you the "number of competitors" it is simply a relative scale based on the number of results found for that query word or phrase.

To get down to the real competition you need to be running intitle: and allintitle: filtered searches.

that just gives the amount of backlinks a particular site has, the question was the competition of a certain keyword.

The most important thing for me is to check the number of results in Google and look at all the sites ranking on the first few pages and study their websites to determine how hard it would be to pass them.

Also with the keyword tool, make sure you make the search "Exact" versus "Broad" to make sure you are looking at the results that are exactly relating to the keyword

You can find the difficulty of particular keyword using SEOMOZ PRO. But it is a paid one, better you can check out their free 30 days trial version.

you may know this with google adwords keyword tool. select the keyword from the results and press the button "download". u will get entire data about that keyword in excel sheet.

I'm sorry, but I think that you're not right.
The green bar only shows the PPC populariy of the keyword, but that doesn't show the exact competition.

There's nothing more effective that combining of the statistics and prediction methods in this case.
Statistical research parameters were written by me earlier in this post and the prediction is a research of the seasoning keywords, 50% of keywords really often change their popularity.

Try using keywordtracker.com, this provides you with an estimate of traffic and competative score so you can guage how much competition there is for a given keyword and weigh this up against potential traffic
