Long Tail vs. Short Tail Keywords

Do you find better luck using Long Tail Keywords as opposed to Short Tail Keywords?

For example, if you have a site about making money online, do you have better results with a Short Tail Keyword like:

Money

or a Long Tail Keyword (phrase) like

Making Free Money Online

Personally, I've found better consistant results for Long Tail Keywords as there seems to be less competition. Scoring high in the Search Engine Rankings for a single word can take more time and effort, but it's worth it. That's my experience anyways and am curious what experience others have had.

Longtail keywords are less-competitive, so you get get good ranking easily. And longtail keywords also bring you more visitors from target market, it will raise converting rate.
However, short tail keywords can bring larger basic number of visitors, more visitors means more opportunities, and if your website has some short tail keywords in certain market get good ranking, you'll get reputation, and for e-marketing, good reputation is priceless.
In a word, if got enough time and resources, short tail keywords will be more beneficial, if not, find those low competetion long tail keywords will be a good choice.

There are many keywords suggestion tools in the Net. so you can choose the one and do your best.
I suppose that short keyword will bring more success.

medium tail words. not many people search long tail keywords, and short tail keywords is too much competition.

Both I would say. Long tail for quicker results, but aim for the short tail keywords too. Of course, it entirely depends on your content and stuff...

Using the phrases "medium tail" & "short tail" keywords really demonstrates just how little most of you know about the whole business.

You have picked up a few "buzz phrases" without any clue what they actually mean and then make a few up.

Do any of you know where the term "long tail" comes from??

First of all, let's define what the Long Tail is when it comes to SEO. The Long Tail of search defines the non-competitive, usually 3-5 word keyphrases that site visitors use to find websites. A broader definition would also include the type and topics of content, word phrasing and such that attracts visitors, using the Long Tail keyphrases.

Generally, the Long Tail keyphrases can be seen once or twice per month in the server logs, but because of the sheer amount of such keyphrases, sites with a log of great content can get pretty decent traffic.
my bad

And THAT is what the "experts" fail on, they have this idea that long tail phrases are something you can find in keyword tools.
Long tail phrases do not show up in keyword tools because the volumes are too low, and the only place to find the ones that work for your pages are in your site logs

2 words = Naargh!!

3 to 4 words = Yaargh!!

5-10 words = Mayhaps, you've been wrong

Well, I'll pass on the argument about the definition of long tail.

What I've found out is that:

a) Long tail brings little traffic
b) Long tail traffic converts at a much higher %

c) Normal keywords are tougher to rank.
d) Normal keywords brings lots of traffic
e) Normal keywords conversion % is low

f) You should go for both and your SEO strategy should always be for the long term.

For long tail keywords there is less competition so you can rank on the first page of Google for long tail keywords far easier than ranking for short tail keywords. Yes, they don’t bring a lot of traffic separately but if you target lots of long tail keywords you can get lots of easy traffic.
