Search Engine Optimisation is, and always has been a misnomer.
You are NOT optimising for the engines, you are optimising for the USERS of the search engines, so the process should have been called OfSU (Optimisation for Search Users) that way no one would ever have been confused about the intended target of the process.
Search providers only want ONE THING:
To be able to show the best pages to the their users that matches their query.
This has been the case ever since search engines emerged from the primordial slime and began evolving. There are no "tricks", no "secret sauce" and no shortcuts.
Provide pages that are the best they can be (optimal) for your intended visitors, and the search engines (all of them) will reward your efforts with extra traffic.
By applying your efforts based on this premise rather than the flawed premise of needing to find a flaw that can be exploited for a short while, will prevent your traffic from disappearing suddenly when that flaw is removed.
