LOST in an SEO maze - please help

So I'm at a total loss as to why my site isn't getting treated better by google and other search engines. So in a last ditch desperate effort I'm looking for someone to point me in the right direction. Here is some info on the site:
http://www.tightsandfights.com
Keywords: villains, captain, crazy, euchre, fights, tights, superhero, vlog, blog, video blog, force, Transmedia, chairs, leader, RLSH, games, series, funny, mask, comic, character, RLSV, adventure, twitter, youtube, comedy, confessions, sad clown, cat woman, Major Faultline, Fantabulous Gal, Leopard Woman,
- Content is added daily.
- over 70 000 backlinks
- Submitted URLs: 532 -- 422 URLs in web index
- I have a sitemap in webmaster tools and a video-sitemap
I'm not sure what else is relevant. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

And have you done anything remotely useful? Or just the usual time wasting stuff like link counting or " article marketing"
You need to read the links in this post

Thanks, I'll review that post.
No article marketing, I don't know what "link counting" is. Most of our promotional efforts have been on twitter and youtube. The links are largely back links from other sites we have. As for SEO, I've tried to cover all the on page stuff I could (alt and title tags for images and links, deep links from the home page, etc).
I don't see any results from these activities.

I think you need to choose your keywords better. They are too generic and it's pretty much futile to rank for them. For example, take your keyword 'blog'. Are you really going to outrank Wikipedia, Wordpress, Blogger, and Blog.com? Even if you miraculously do, what's the chance that someone who searches 'blog' on Google is looking for a site about superheros? Focus on more specific keywords first, then move on to the more general ones.

Hmmm...good point eyu. What keywords do you suggest? How do I go about choosing keywords?
On the page my focus has been on the words "superhero" and "comedy" but I think they might fall into the same trap you mentioned.

"Link counting" is this kind of thing - "- over 70 000 backlinks"
They are obviously totally useless links.
Best thing you (and very many others) could do is forget about search engines and "ranking" and focus on USERS.
Focus on getting traffic, real tangible visitors, rather than the vague hope of traffic from SE referrals at some time in the future.

My feelings exactly. We haven't been focused on search engines and have instead focused on creating and posting quality content. But that content isn't really getting a far shake because its only being found by people who we engage with on Youtube and Twitter. That's why we've turned our attention to SEO.
Are there any actual suggestions that can be offered?

SEO IS about improving the PAGES, anything else is promotion.

maybe you are not getting the good links and bots can't reach your keywords according to what you are expecting... gather some good reputation from bloggers and users or good reviews might help.

Your keywords are really bad. You'll never rank for those. Try ranking for keyword phrases instead of keywords.

You need to focus on things that matters, which is targeted traffic and not those time wasting things such as link counting.

Get your keywords here http://www.wordtracker.com/ but careful, when I used them I tried the free week trial, and they charged my credit card anyhow. I got my money back but it was not an easy task....however the tool is fantastic.

Use Google's free tools rather than paying for anything. Find phrases thar are getting decent numbers of searches but have low numbers of pages fulfilling those searches. Tailor pages on your site for those phrases. Use the phrases as link text in the backlinks that you can alter. Try to get links on sites that are relevant and that will send you traffic. As to the rest of the 70,000 - forget them.
And while you're doing all that, remember that it's no use getting traffic if the site isn't good - make sure that visitors get what they expect and that the info etc is good quality. Make sure site navigation is good, clear and effective - you want visitors to move around the site.

The last few comments that I read are about what is termed as Long Tail Keywords. Google also frowns on too many keywords. In todays market, you have to very precise. The best way to rank is that your LTK should match your URL. When I setup my set for EMR I found the term Cheap EMR and I bought the URL www cheapemr.com. My real url is openmedpractice.com but I am ranked 1# for Cheap EMR because of the dead on URL and LTK.

Sooooo! it's plastered all over the pages, in the page title, in anchor text but it's the domain name that gets the "rank"??
Purrlease! Have a little common sense.
And does that "#1 rank" bring any converting traffic?

"Cheap EMR" doesn't even appear on keyword tools. "EMR" barely breaks 300k searches a month, which is low. Highly doubt it brings anything.

Well Said. All you want to do is to focus on the visitors. Spend time to find out what the users need from your site. Yow will be granted with organic links. Just think, you own a site which gets links from all around the world. The best way to increase your power.

A recent research on search behavior showed that the searchers are becoming more specific in their queries and keying in long tail keywords more as this saves their time. You can easily rank with Long tail keyword as there is less competition and will target your potential customers.

You said most of your backlinks are from other sites you own. If they are hosted from the same ip address they will have very little value.
