Does having a bunch of text matter for better search results?

Right now I have a lot of text on my home page, but I want to get rid of it and put pictures... Does it matter for SEO?

Yes, content definitely matters for seo. Exactly how much you should have on your homepage is not an easy question though. I definitely would not get rid of all of the text on your homepage. But it may depend on how much quality content you have on your site as a whole.

If you go to the Webmaster Central Help Forum you will find several threads about sites hit by the Panda update. One common theme I did see was about the ratio of quality content, to that of junk content. By junk content, I mean ad blocks, fake testimonials, link lists, auto generated content, and yes, possibly pictures.

I couldn't find this particular thread right now, but one penalized site had a fair amount of content on the homepage...sort of. But most of the interior pages consisted of 2 large Adsense blocks, a nice looking picture, and about a 30 word description. It was a site about women's hairstyles, so you would expect pictures. But the only above the fold content was an Adsense block.

I would err on the side of caution, and consider how much quality content you have on your site, and how is it presented to visitors.

Good luck.

Search Engines can't "see" pictures.

If your page was to be full of pictures then search engines have a hard time understanding the topic of the page.

So text on your site is very good, It helps understand what is going on and helps with keywords.

However,
If you do put pictures on your site, then google recommends that you use the alt text.
For example, if you were selling hammers and you had a picture of a man holding a blue hammer, You would use the alt text "man holding a blue hammer"

But this still doesnt help tooo much in the way of SEO.

having at least some text thats on subject with your keywords in will help.
However write the page for the USER not the Search engine.

if your page is worth visiting then people will find you. ( At least they should )

Google have mentioned that they can read some words from some images ( and flash ) However they havent said if these are used actively in results etc.

Why would it "badly affect"????

Changing some content may well improve results.

It certainly might, however using the word "badly" implies purely negative effects.

Yes, if you insert relevant search terms/keywords and make it unique as much as possible

It is either going to be unique or it is not.

There are no varying degrees of "uniqueness"!

Yes content matters a lot but it should be unique and quality content with appropriate keyword density in it.

There is no doubt that content is KING but images grab the attention of visitors ,so you need a combination of both.Use a descriptive file name and add an alt text value to the image. Doing away with content will harm your site.
