Hey guys, I have a semi-basic understanding of SEO with Meta Tags, Backlinks etc
the only thing i really don't get is, what do I do to ensure that my website will show in results if people search for a specific keyword.
lizardguru.com is the website im currently working on, its for my partner and I was just wondering if I could have some friendly advice?
Whats missing, are the keywords ok?
Thank you

The only thing you can do to ensure a page from your site shows in results is to bid highest for the keyword you're targeting. There's no guaranteed way to rank.
SEO is simply a subset of marketing and like marketing it's a never ending activity. What you need to do to get a specific page to rank for a specific keyword or phrase is dependent on many things. One major one being the competition.
The best advice I can offer is to continue learning about seo. Don't see it as a magic formula thing, but rather as a subset of marketing. Learn the technical side as it applies to site development. Make sure links are crawlable, organize your content in a way that makes it easy to understand, learn how to write redirects when needed, etc.
While you're learning keep creating content that people find interesting, helpful, entertaining, etc. Then do what you can to promote your content to get others to notice it.
If you keep creating and promoting good content, much of the seo takes care of itself and you'll learn the technical details along the way. Also know that seo is only one part of the equation. Traffic is great as long as that traffic does something. You still need to build a great site that turns visitors into customers.
There's a lot to learn, but it's all learnable if you keep at it.

No and No
Meta elements have been of no use for over TEN years and backlinks are actually promotion in BOTH senses of the word promotion.
And this:

is 100% correct. Follow that and you don't need anything else.
Forget search engines actually exist, you are not marketing to them. You are marketing to the USERS of search, and as such YOU are one of them.
Be guided by common sense not "experts" and their silly "formulas"

It's funny how much more search traffic I've gotten ever since I stopped paying attention to them and put all my focus on my audience.

Thanks to everyone who chipped in, I've decided to use hostgators free SEO service to help me learn that.
But on a side note I did some research and planning and decided to use bbpress which can be integrated with wordpress (the script I'm using) doing this allows me to make it more community based, my biggest point I'm going to make is that the community will now play a big part in this.
Word of mouth is what I'm counting on, do you guys feel this is a good approach?

Thanks for giving time to write it. It will help many other people including me and remind the basics of SEO which people often forget over the time.

I'm not sure I can summarize everything about seo in a single forum post or thread, but I'm happy to answer questions if you have any.
Here's a link to a 3 part article I wrote for Hongkiat.com, Beginner’s Guide to SEO: Best Practices. The link takes you to part 3. At the top of the posts are links to parts 1 and 2. The whole thing is best read in order.

When I said bid yes I meant the ads. The only way to ensure you show up in search results is to be the highest bidder. There are lots of things you can do to make it likely your pages will show up in search results, but there are no guarantees unless you show search engines the money.

Yes, we should agree with this point.
Instead only targeting blindly the search engines, we must fix the target by considering the users, whatever the site may be(affiliate site or tech blog or any other).
Give importance to your content and make it useful for so long years and try to have a back links where it is actually useful.
That's enough and if there is worth enough then links will be build soon and doing little seo work is enough for that.
Its all about Worthy Content and White Hat SEO.
Slow but must be done constant and it will lead to generate regular traffic.
Thanks.

Hello everyone Im working on two websites at the moment and really struggling to get them to rank better.

Both websites have some form of SEO, Aurora pictures comes up first when you search "Kent Filming" but for "Kent photography" I dont see it anywhere!
And for Lizardguru its a website about caring for lizards but i cant compete with the competition.
Can i have some help with keywords etc?
My partner and myself have decided she does the writing to the best of her abilities while il do SEO as she knows nothing about it xD
So il be doing the Optimisation on each page. thanks

Maybe you might need to promote the page if your page doesn't show up for its keywords in search engines.
Just don't spam other websites,

First, think about it this way.
Does the website have enough content to compete with your competition? Do you think that this website has more information that might make visitors more interested in your website, instead of the competition's own?

First of all forget rankings as a useful measure of marketing and optimisation.
So what words and phrases do the PAGES (not site) get found for?
HINT:
Use your site access logs or analytics to find these.
Have you done any word research or are you just guessing?
