I am just curious on the role of meta tags in search engine, I've heard that they were ignored by all search engines, is it true?

ALL meta elements are read by search engines, Some are used most are NOT

Now, if you want to ask about a SPECIFIC meta element, (which has probably been discussed a hundred times before) refer to it by NAME. NOT the abstract description of meta tag. That way we can ALL be discussing the same thing!

Meta description is the concise summary of your web page content and meta tags are the most important keywords describing your website. Search engines consider meta tags but not loves stuffing.

OK. Here's a page straight from Google about what types of use of the meta element they support. Sorry, Chris, even they call 'em tags. Demanding they be called elements may just be a lost cause.

Note that the use of the description part of meta is rather important. It's generally, though not always, what is seen in SERPs to describe your page (and you'll want to keep it at or below 155 characters). That and the page title (which also appears in SERPs) are your more important tools for those doing a search.

No one uses the keywords part of meta anymore. Thank God!

Guess people will have to actually work (!!!) at making their content (!!!) relevant to users, which will also make said content (!!!) indexable and rankable.

Watched this from a Youtube SEO tutorial before and it actually is true, META keywords are not important any more. I usually skipped it too when filling the fields for the SEO plugin for Wordpress and just focus on the most important one for SEO, the TITLE and DESCRIPTION.

I feel your pain

I fight a lonely battle on references to opening tags and closing tags as separate, as in the "end span tag".

I have read same in one of the blog I was passing by. It said that meta keywords has no any value in Search Engine result these days. I am not sure how much truth the article carried but there are many people who say that meta keywords has no advantage.
