I have a client who just acquired a competitor and is basically taking over the business, getting rid of the old name and everything. With that there is a high traffic domain name. I am wondering the best way to handle this. Do I just add a forwarder to the domain name and have it forward to the new website? I am trying to approach this in the best way in terms of SEO. Another option is to have a popup explaining there is a new owner of the company and then redirecting to the new company website.

Thoughts?

Maintaining a website for a business you've taken over and, in effect, closed down, would be a very odd thing to do.

Simplest is one page to which all requests are redirected, explaining the situation in simple terms and offering links to appropriate pages on your site, probably including an FAQ for customers of the vanishing site.

As time goes on you can just point the acquired domain to the surviving site.

Using a permanent redirect of course.

If you wish to keep any SE referrals that exist, use a temporary redirect (302 response) to the interstitial page so that both pages will co-exist in the short term and give you chance to analyse the search words and phrases that were sending traffic to the new aquisition.
