I was talking to my friend who used to be part of a successful small business out here in NY. I was telling him what I do (I work in SEO) and he told me his company used to pay google $400 a month to rank first for the keyword they specified. I told him that's impossible and Google has never accepted payment for organic search results but he insisted on it - he told me his company saw a lot more traffic because of it. Is this true? He's not the type of person to lie or make up crazy stories about this kind of stuff, so as much as I'm skeptical I'm more curious if this was ever the case. Any info out there?

Most likely he was paying for ads and just misunderstood

I agree with Paul. Your friend was likely thinking of AdWords. Google doesn't accept payment for organic ranking.

No, for orgabic results you do not have to pay to google. If you want to insert you add then , google will take money for that.

That's what I figured. I said "you must be thinking of adwords" and he said "no no it was organic I swear!" But yeah, Adwords. Glad to hear Google never had a weird pay-for-rankings phase - would have totally delegitimized them anyway.

Yeah. it would have turned all of their results into ads. Then again quite a few of their results are ads now.

I am sure he is talking you about paying for Adwords (PPC service by Google to show results above Google organic Search results). Google do not accept bribe to bring a website up in Google organic search result(at least I believe).

We can bid for the keyword which we specify in Google Adwords and your friend is paying $400 for this only.

I think it is totally rumor and Google never accept payment for organic result. And may be he is taking about PPC. So first confirm about this.

yeah they will accept payment for adwords whether it is organic or non organic.

You'd think someone promoting link building services would know that the definition of organic search results is the non-AdWords results. Google does not take payment for organic results.
