"Organic" traffic should be EXTRA to traffic from links or other forms of advertising.

for me SEO is a large chunk of site promotion. i do as much as I can with seo and complement it with other online marketing techniques. doing just SEO is not as effective imo just as ignoring seo in online marketing is quite foolish

Yes, without doing the SEO, SEM will be worthless.

I think SEO is more essential, but SEO and SEM are both important. Putting at least a little effort in both could produce positiove results.

We always do both. When we started a new website - 99% of our traffic was from PPC. While that was going on - we worked on the organic side of SEO and once we were getting more traffic from organic than PPC - we put less online advertising dollars into PPC since we were getting free traffic from organic.

The two are Yin and Yang, they work best in tandem.

An SEM campaign can tell you a lot about what keywords you should be targeting and maximizing for.
SEO (due to Google's relevance ratings) can help your Adwords SEM links display more prominently.

But at the end of the day, both strategies will fail if you don't have well designed, well written, engaging landing pages.

I look after a couple of websites for a company who spend absolutely nothing at all on any kind of SEO, do no "link building" do not bother with "Twittering", have no "facebook account, write no articles whatsoever, do not have a blog but they manage turn over £8,000 to £10,000 a MONTH by spending ~£800 a month on Adwords.

The two are not inexorably intertwined UNLESS you expect to spend NOTHING AT ALL on your marketing campaign.
However, if all your eggs are the one basket of SE referrals and random link dropping is your marketing strategy then you have to try and make the best of whatever traffic comes your way.

I agree with SEO..

Without SEO no one will be indexed much in google and other major search engines.

Doing simple SEO is ineffective,..Creative SEO is much helpful and we can get fast results too.

Oh Please!!!!! Have some sense!!!!

There are MILLIONS of pages that have absolutely nothing done to them in "SEO" terms and do extremely well both in Search and traffic.

Do you think that Wikipedia employ SEOs? Amazon? Ebay?

Do you think this forum employ SEOs for every post?

Is every blog at Wordpress or Blogspot SEOed???

Here is what I have come to conclude on in the last few recent months-

I came into the "Search Engine Optimization" world knowing nothing, completely empty brain (much like the other users here on this forum.) I took the time, to research and understand how and why you should optimize your website for search engines.

I've concluded that the reason others believe in SEO so strongly is because if they can get the number 1 keyword for a certain term, they don't have to spend any money on marketing... the search engine will send them all their users for free...

Or so they hope!

The problem being is that most of them have no idea what keywords they should be targeting.
They also think that SEO is link building and link building is SEO, and of course are wrong on both counts.

The basic problem though is that back there in 1993 somebody gave SEM/SEO the WRONG NAMES.
So now everybody thinks that search engines are the target for their efforts, whereas if had been correctly named as SEARCH marketing and SEARCH optimisation it may just be that it would sink in that the SEARCH USERS are the real target and that the engines are merely the cehicle or medium used to reach to intended marketplace.

The way people treat search marketing (well he clueless ones at least) would be the equivalent in the real world of using television and expecting the T.V. sets to turn up and buy things.

It is accepted that newspaper and magazine adverts are intended for the readers, so why don't they understand that search advertising is also aimed at the USERS?

That's the best example right there.

Of course it's marketed towards the users, the person who linked a million times and has good page structure should not have the term "Barack Obama" over Barack Obama's official website... the best, and actual page results that provide the users with the best information go on top.

Plenty of acronyms are thrown around the internet when it comes to marketing practices for websites. It can be a lot to try and process for a business or website owner looking to drive traffic to their site. Search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) are two such acronyms that are extremely important to a web presence. SEO is one part of an overall SEM strategy. SEO is to apples as SEM is to a fruit salad. Apples are part of a fruit salad but a fruit salad is not part of apples.

The first place to start is the website in question. SEO takes aspects of that website and makes it more efficient to navigate and index. This can be in the form of meta-tag clean up, keyword rich articles, adding meta-tags to images for relevant words, coding clean up, appropriate titling, efficient link-structuring and much more. One could think of SEO in the same way they think of an automobile tune up. It helps to streamline and correct problems before they can have a significant, negative impact.

There is no such thing as "meta tags for images"

And the rest of your copy and paste is about as factual as that is!!!
