Probably to a drunk monkey.

Because most SEO companies pretty much suck.

Just learn basic SEO and have a good writer (if you aren't one yourself). Enjoy the subject of your website and really get involved networking.

Don't waste your money on SEO companies. Not saying that all are bad - but I really do believe most are.

I agree with bigcat, there are good SEO professionals but its really hard to find them when we outsource the service. If we go for companies, they will burn our purse and freelancers are not trust worthy hands for me at least.

I would eliminate EVERYONE who posts at forums with a "SEO services" type of signature.

"Where would you turn?"

Just learn CEO yourself it's not that hard. At graduation I had a 3ed grade education and was diagnosed as being mildly mentally handicapped at 6 years old although I have learned to do my own CEO work.

Actually, with the apparent state of many SEO "experts" that may well be a distinct advantage.

(no offence intended)

Well speaking from what I've observed from these so called "guru"s so far, it's definitely not worth it. The things they do is something you can do yourself, with the advantage of being free since you'll be doing it yourself. The only downside is that it'll take time, both for learning the "process" of what they do (which is pretty much clockwork repetitive), and the actual implementation itself.

Money's better spent learning that outsourcing.
